50 Days of Promises (12): Armor of God

Ephesians 6:10-18

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.

I get up at 5am in the morning before writing as a clean slate, open to where the Lord leads and with no agenda on my heart. I pray, open God’s word, and start writing.

My first thoughts this morning as I found myself led into this well known passage was two things, how unbelievably appropriate that I was reading about the Armor of God on Veterans Day and “I’m gonna be late for work” ha ha.

There is so much meat for the hungry Christian to feast on in this passage!

Right off the bat I am hit with the flood of examples throughout biblical history where the greatest battles were won not by great men leading overpowering forces, but instead by faithful men trusting in God’s direction, protection, strength, tactics, and timing.

The very foundation of all 12-step recovery programs is the concept of powerlessness, faith and surrender my will.

In really thinking about what this passage is telling me, I have an emerging realization that my striving to “do the right thing” in the past so often times failed because I was trying to be successful in my my own power, for my own glory, following my own agendas.

In every situation, God first says “look to me for your next step, then follow my directions and I will succeed on your behalf”.

Our purpose and power must come from looking to God, not trying to figure out what I am going to do next and how I am going to do it.

Spiritual warfare is not something to take likely or think “it’s just a metaphor”. It is terrifyingly real, especially as you get to recognize the forces at work and realize that without the power of God through the workings of the Holy Spirit within that we are all pawns working for Satan in our blindness.

Jealousy, resentment, pride, ego, selfishness, lusts of flesh and power, these are the forces that Satan feeds through the passions of the world, external forces thriving on broken internal beliefs.

As unbelievers we were caught in the snare of the devil  and under control of the power of the evil one, and were in bondage to Satan.

But as powerful as Satan is over the blind of this world, just how much more powerful is the Trinity of God. Christ has already won the battle and Satan knows that his time is growing shorter.

As believers in Christ, followers of Christ, disciples of Christ we are called to listen for, trust in and respond to the call of God.

We can trust in the promise that the Whole Armor of God is available to all who seek to put it on and wear it boldly and proudly.

Our nation was founded on biblical principals.

Some are trying to rewrite history and take God out of our great country but on this special day of remembrance and honor of those veterans who are fighting for Americas freedom and (prayerfully) for spiritual values and to those who have sacrificed so much, and those who gave their very life and loved ones so that we could live free; we should take a moment to thank God for those soldiers who have fought hundreds of years to uphold those very freedoms to love God, serve God and honor God and pray deeply that our country returns to the great biblical values that made her so great to begin with.

Father God I feel almost speechless this morning as I think about America’s men and women who have fought so bravely, and many who have died honorably in maintaining the Godly freedoms you gave us as Your creation. I pray Lord that our great nation not continue on the path she is on, embracing political correctness at the expense of pushing out biblical truths. We need a revival Lord, a new awakening that our leaders who may be at the helpless hands of the ruler of the flesh become overwhelmed with You in the forefront of every thought and begin to seek you in prayer. Be with our nation Lord God, live in our hearts and minds, give us the courage and desires to wear Your entire Armor so that as Christians we can love the world as You do, so that You may be the one to go before us and after us and not rely on the strength of our might but instead by the mighty sovereignty of Your loving design over all things. Help us this day Lord return to You in our simple lives, that each may come to know You in a whole new way. Bless our troops and their families Lord, may they be fighting for Your righteousness against the evils and principalities of this world Lord and not in service to man’s principals, designs and desires. Your will always above ours be done Father God. In Jesus name I pray…
